Continuum elastic theory of adsorbate vibrational relaxation

چکیده
An analytical theory is presented for the damping of low-frequency adsorbate vibrations via resonant coupling to the substrate phonons. The system is treated classically, with the substrate modeled as a semi-infinite elastic continuum and the adsorbate overlayer modeled as an array of point masses connected to the surface by harmonic springs. The theory provides a simple expression for the relaxation rate in terms of fundamental parameters of the system: g5mv̄0 /AcrcT , where m is the adsorbate mass, v̄0 is the measured frequency, Ac is the overlayer unit-cell area, and r and cT are the substrate mass density and transverse speed of sound, respectively. This expression is strongly coverage dependent, and predicts relaxation rates in excellent quantitative agreement with available experiments. For a half-monolayer of carbon monoxide on the copper ~100! surface, the predicted damping rate of in-plane frustrated translations is 0.50310 s, as compared to the experimental value of (0.4360.07)310 s. Furthermore it is shown that, for all coverages presently accessible to experiment, adsorbate motions exhibit collective effects which cannot be treated as stemming from isolated oscillators. © 1998 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-9606~98!51803-X#

Controlling adsorbate vibrational lifetimes using superlattices
We propose using short-period superlattices as substrates to control the vibrational relaxation dynamics of adsorbate overlayers. The mass modulation of superlattices creates both band gaps and large spectral enhancements in the phonon density of states. These modifications can dramatically alter the coupling between vibrational modes of the adsorbate overlayer and the substrate lattice, thereb...

Ultrafast vibrational dynamics of small molecules on platinum (Pt) layers in water are investigated using 2D attenuated total reflectance IR spectroscopy. Isotope combinations of carbon monoxide and cyanide are used to elucidate inter-adsorbate and substrate-adsorbate interactions. Despite observed cross-peaks in the CO spectra, we conclude that the molecules are not vibrationally coupled. Rath...

In this article thermoelastic damping in nano-beam resonators is investigated based on nonlocal theory of elasticity and the Euler-Bernoulli beam assumptions. The governing equation of deflection of the beam is obtained from shear and moment resultants and stress–strain relationship of the nonlocal elasticity model and also the governing equations of thermoelastic damping are established by usi...

A combination of time-resolved vibrational spectroscopy and density functional theory techniques have been applied to study the vibrational energy relaxation dynamics of the Re(4,4'-dicyano-2,2'-bipyridine)(CO)3Cl (Re(CO)3Cl) catalyst for CO2 to CO conversion bound to gold surfaces. The kinetics of vibrational relaxation exhibits a biexponential decay including an ultrafast initial relaxation a...
متن کاملSurface Energy and Elastic Medium Effects on Torsional Vibrational Behavior of Embedded Nanorods
In this paper surface energy and elastic medium effects on torsional vibrational behavior of nanorods are studied. The surface elasticity theory is used to consider the surface energy effects and the elastic medium is modeled as torsional springs attached to the nanorod. At the next step, Hamilton’s principle is utilized to derive governing equations and boundary conditions. Then, with the aid ...
